Comments: | Il'in and his wife had been close friends with Vertov and Svilova ever since the 1930s. Vertov and Il'in were also working together on projects in the Filmstudio Detfil'm. It was a particularly illustrious birthday in this case because in January 1946 Vertov too had reached the age of 50. Both had been born in 1896. Therefore the poems refers indirectly also to the author himself. The codes "Vienna" and "Berlin" at the beginning of the poem refer to the two great cities which had been liberated by the Soviet Union at the end of the Second World War. The half-century here also marks the now celebrated return to one's own family and home. |
