Stenogramma doklada Dzigi Vertova v M.o.r.t., 5 aprelja 1935 g. (Stenogramm eines Vortrags von Dziga Vertov im M.o.r.t.)
This lecture, which was given at the Moscow Society for Theatre Workers (MORT) is one of the most illuminating of Vertov's previous unpublished texts. In a very long autobiographical introduction, Vertov describes his "pre-cinematic" activities: he used to write science-fiction novels and from the beginning was interested in unifying science, experiment and art. The central principle of thought and action becomes rhythm, which Vertov uses mnemo-technically and finally as a perceptual organiser - both on an auditory and on a visual level.

Comments: The focus of the lecture lies in the concept of Kinoglaz, which is here developed as a principle of work and Weltanschauung. The rhetoric of the text reflects the ideological uncertainties of the year 1935: at that time there was only a thin dividing line between the glorification and damnation of an artist. In this text Vertov did everything he could to ensure that his film work would not be accused of formalism. As is well known, this would prove the undoing of some artists, including Dmitrij Šostakovič, who had worked together with Vertov. Translation in the Collection. This document is a copy made in the 1960/70s, the original is held in RGALI.
